Enjoy
the Local Area
Our specially adapted minibuses leave after breakfast
each morning to local beaches and promenades, shopping
centres, town centres, marinas and markets. All these
trips are included in the price of your holiday. Please
check out some of our desitnations below.
Montana Sol is situated in walking distance to a large
hypermarket and a fully wheelchair accessible train
service, should you wish to explore more independently.
BENALMADENA MARINA
Visits to the Marina will be on Sunday. Check out the
yachts and local shops and bars. If you wish to venture
further, you can walk from here to La Carihuela. Promonade,
again flat, perfect for wheelchair users. Stop in one
of the local cafes and watch the world go by. You can
also check out the details for the Benalmaden Cruise
tour from here.
PALOMA PARK
The Parque de la Paloma is over 200,000 square meters
in size and was opened in the mid 1980’s. The
land is laid out round a manmade lake and can be quite
hilly in places but there are plenty of seats for resting
and taking in the view. The paths are monoblock which
makes them easy to walk and operate wheelchairs without
fear of tripping on uneven slabs. The main attraction
of the park is the wildlife which roam freely. You can
buy bread to feed the animals, who are willing to eat
from your hands. Every rustle of a bush will bring out
another animal into view along with the peacocks which
you can find strutting about, giving a display from
their tail feathers.
LA CARIHUELA SEA FRONT
One of the most attractive and more authentically Spanish
areas is called La Carihuela which is a charming area
with many of the original fishermen's cottages still
existing and pretty houses with bougainvillea covered
patios. The seafront promenade known as the Paseo Maritimo,
runs from Playamar along to La Carihuela, continuing
as far as Benalmadena Marina making a walk a very pleasant
one with lovely sea views and many excellent seafront
fish restaurants, cafes and bars and shops, along the
way. Perfect for wheelchair users. Most tourists come
to the Costa del Sol to enjoy the beaches and the weather
and they won't be disappointed by La Carihuela beaches
as they are clean and sandy and tend to be wider and
longer than many others on the Costa del Sol which has
also contributed to its popularity as a resort.
TORREMOLINOS MARKET
There is an outside market once a week by the famous
Torremolinos bull-ring, on Thursdays from 9-13:30. This
is the main market with hundreds of people visiting.
It can get very crowded but you can grab your bargains
here. There are also several bars dotted around the
place so you can stop and relax in the shade of one
of these. Mostly there are clothes, shoes, bags and
plenty of bling for sale, but there are also fruit and
nut stalls. You can find a bargain here but you have
to haggle. The bull-ring is open while the market is
on so take the chance and wander around.
PLAYAMAR BEACH
Playamar beach stretches to the east of the Carihuela
beaches and Benalmadena and although gets very busy
during the peak summer months of July and August, due
to the wide promonade, you can still have a lovely stroll
from here to La Carihuela, stopping off for coffee or
a nosey in the shops. Walking from Playamar to La Carihuela
or as far as Benalmadena Marina is ideal as the promonade
is flat and ideal for wheelchairs.
SELWO MARINA PARK
Selwo Marina, the park with the most charismatic fauna
of South America, situated in Benalmadena and has the
only Dolphinarium in Andalucia, which offers you the
opportunity to see live dolphins in action. A relaxing
stroll through the Las Antillas zone. In this Caribbean
landscape we find the Selwo Marina Dolphinarium, the
only installation of its type in Andalucia, where you
can see at close range what the dolphin family are like
and how they live. Incredible marine mammals who have
evolved over thousands of years to adapt themselves
to the marine environment. Also in this zone is the
famous sea lion enclosure. The great complex that is
the SELWO MARINA Dolphinarium consists of extensive
terraces to ensure comfortable viewing of the dolphin
and sea lion exhibitions. There are five pools, two
for training, one for reproduction, one for veterinary
treatments and the exhibition pool. This last, the biggest
of all, is a spectacular circular pool of saltwater,
whose front panels are transparent, enabling the visitors
to view up close and under the water, barely a few centimetres
away, the intelligent dolphins from the Bottlenose species,
originating in the warm waters of the Caribbean. Close
by is the sea lions enclosure which allows us to meet
these playful young specimens, originating in the faraway
lands of the Chilean and Argentinean Patagonia areas.
The Selwo Marina sea lion family manage to delight everyone
in their exhibition. The male adults from this unique
family sport a large mane the length of their neck and
it is from this that they gain their name and can reach
up to 300 kg in weight, while the females may weigh
as much as 200kg.
